Built-in skills and tools

Your sandbox gives your agent MCP tools for interacting with Tembo, a tembo CLI for terminal operations, and skills that explain how to use those capabilities. This page lists Tembo’s built-in capabilities. Your available tools and skills can also depend on your agent, organization settings, and connected integrations. Third-party MCP servers and custom skills can add to this list.

MCP tools

Tool discovery and execution

Your agent uses these tools to discover and call the MCP tools connected to your session.

Tool	Description
`search_mcp_tools`	Search connected servers for tools by capability or name.
`list_mcp_servers`	List configured servers, connection status, discovered tool counts, and initialization errors.
`get_mcp_tool_details`	Get the complete input schemas and metadata for selected tools.
`call_mcp_tool`	Call a tool on a selected server with its arguments.
`execute_mcp_code`	Run TypeScript that calls multiple MCP tools and returns a final result without placing intermediate results in the agent’s context.

Sessions, repositories, and artifacts

Tool	Description
`list_repositories`	List your organization’s enabled repositories, including IDs, URLs, owners, and base or target branches.
`create_pull_request`	Open and record a pull request after changes have been committed and pushed.
`setVmKeepAlive`	Set how many seconds your session VM should remain alive, starting when the tool is called.
`createArtifact`	Create a shareable HTML, Markdown, CSV, JSON, or uploaded-file artifact.
`uploadFile`	Prepare a direct file upload of up to 5 GiB and return the upload URL, required headers, asset ID, and download URL.
`completeFileUpload`	Mark an upload as complete after the file bytes have been sent to the upload URL.
`respond_to_user`	Send the final result for your session.

Agent state

These tools are available when the session is associated with an agent.

Tool	Description
`getAgentState`	Read a value from the current agent’s state, or omit the key to read the full state object.
`setAgentState`	Set a string value for a key in the current agent’s state.

Slack

These tools require a connected Slack workspace and the appropriate permissions for the requested action.

Tool	Description
`readSlackMessages`	Read a Slack thread using its channel and thread timestamp.
`sendSlackMessage`	Send a message to a Slack channel.
`sendSlackDirectMessage`	Send a direct message to a Slack user as the Tembo bot.
`addTemboToChannel`	Add the Tembo bot to a Slack channel.
`listSlackWorkspaceUsers`	List workspace users, including user IDs and display names.
`add_slack_reaction`	Add an emoji reaction to a Slack message.

Tembo CLI commands

You can inspect the installed CLI with tembo --help. Use --help on any command or subcommand for its arguments and options. Placeholders in the tables below, such as <port>, represent values you supply; square brackets indicate optional arguments.

Git and repositories

Command	Description
`tembo list-repositories`	List repositories attached to your sandbox session. Alias: `tembo repositories`.
`tembo commit`	Create and push a verified commit for your session. Use this instead of `git commit`.
`tembo merge <branch>`	Merge another branch into your current branch and finalize merge commits through Tembo. Use this instead of `git merge`.
`tembo merge --continue`	Finish a merge after you resolve conflicts and stage the resolutions.
`tembo merge --abort`	Abort an in-progress merge.
`tembo pull-request create`	Open a pull request after your source branch has been pushed. Alias: `tembo pr create`.

Browser, previews, and recordings

Command	Description
`tembo browser open <url>`	Open a URL in the sandbox browser.
`tembo service --port <port>`	Expose a running local HTTP service through a public preview URL and create a service artifact.
`tembo record desktop [output]`	Record the entire Computer preview desktop.
`tembo record focused-window [output]`	Record the currently focused desktop window.
`tembo record window --class <class> [output]`	Focus and record a desktop window identified by its class.

Files, artifacts, and sessions

Command	Description
`tembo upload-file <path>`	Upload a local file of up to 5 GiB to Tembo assets.
`tembo artifact create`	Create an artifact from inline content, a local file, or an existing uploaded asset.
`tembo respond-to-user`	Send your session’s final response, with optional Slack attachments.
`tembo set-vm-keep-alive <seconds>`	Keep your session VM alive for a positive whole-number duration in seconds.
`tembo mcp-gateway`	Run the session’s MCP gateway.
`tembo help [command]`	Show general help or help for a command.
`tembo --version`	Show the installed CLI version.

AWS

You need an enabled AWS integration to authenticate and access your organization’s accounts.

Command	Description
`tembo aws auth`	Install or refresh short-lived AWS credential profiles.
`tembo aws profiles`	List enabled AWS accounts for your organization.
`tembo aws exec <selector> <command...>`	Run a command using a selected profile, environment label, account ID, or integration ID.

Tailscale

You need a connected Tailscale integration to join your organization’s tailnet.

Command	Description
`tembo tailscale join`	Start Tailscale in userspace mode and join the tailnet using a one-time key; safe to call again when already joined.
`tembo tailscale ssh <target> [command...]`	Connect to a tailnet host over SSH with non-interactive defaults.
`tembo tailscale status`	List tailnet hosts reachable from your sandbox.
`tembo tailscale logout`	Leave the tailnet and remove the ephemeral node.

Skills

Skills give your agent reusable instructions for a particular task. The tables below summarize their names and purposes without reproducing their contents.

Built-in skills

Skill	Description
`agent-browser`	Automate browser interactions, inspect pages, take screenshots, and test web applications.
`aws`	Authenticate AWS CLI and SDK commands with short-lived credentials and work across enabled organization accounts.
`generate-preview-url`	Expose local HTTP services and create shareable preview URLs.
`install-custom-dependencies`	Install missing packages, CLI tools, or libraries using the sandbox’s Nix-based environment.
`tembo-artifact`	Create shareable reports, walkthroughs, diagrams, dashboards, structured exports, and uploaded-media artifacts.
`tembo-cli`	Use the sandbox CLI for pull requests, service previews, uploads, and user responses.
`tembo-file-upload`	Upload local sandbox files to Tembo assets.
`tembo-git-instructions`	Follow your organization’s commit-message and pull-request-title instructions.

Integration-provided skills

These skills are added when you configure the corresponding integration.

Skill	Description
`tailscale`	Join your organization’s tailnet and reach private databases, internal APIs, and other hosts.
`<VPN name> private network access`	Connect to the private network behind a configured OpenConnect VPN gateway. The skill name depends on your VPN’s name.

Your organization, repositories, and selected agent can provide additional skills. Those skills are not part of Tembo’s built-in set and vary between sessions.
