Linear - Tembo Docs

Overview

The Linear integration lets you assign issues to Tembo and have it open pull requests against them. Tagging Tembo on an issue or comment (via Linear’s agent protocol) spins up a Tembo session and streams its progress back as activity on the issue. On the SaaS platform this is pre-configured — on self-hosted you need to create your own Linear OAuth application and point it at your instance.

Step 1: Create an OAuth Application

Go to Linear > Settings > API > OAuth Applications > New

Application name

Choose a name, e.g. Tembo (self-hosted). This will be visible to users when they authorize the app.

Callback URL

http://<your-instance-ip>/api/oauth/linear/callback

Enable Agent

Toggle Agent on for the application. This is required — it’s what allows Tembo to be assigned to or @mentioned on issues and to respond via Linear’s agent session protocol. Without it, Tembo cannot act as an agent in Linear.

Create the application

Click Create.

Step 2: Generate a Client Secret

On the application’s settings page, copy the Client ID and generate/copy the Client Secret. Save both — you will need them for the Tembo config.

Step 3: Add a Webhook

Still on the application’s settings page:

Go to the Webhooks tab and click New webhook

Set the Webhook URL to:

http://<your-instance-ip>/api/webhook/linear

Under Data change events, check Issues
Save — Linear will generate a Webhook signing secret. Copy it, you will need it for the config.

Agent session events (from the Agent toggle in Step 1) are delivered on this same webhook automatically.

Step 4: Configure Tembo

Open /var/lib/tembo/config.json (via the VS Code server at http://<your-instance-ip>:8888 or via SSH) and add the following keys:

Key	Where to find it
`clientId`	Application settings page, listed as Client ID
`clientSecret`	The client secret you generated in Step 2
`webhookSecret`	The webhook signing secret from Step 3
`appName`	The name you gave the app in Step 1 — used as Tembo’s display name in Linear activity

After saving, restart the API:

sudo systemctl restart tembo-ts-api

Updating the config.json will also cause the instance API to restart automatically.

Step 5: Install and Authorize

In your Tembo instance, go to Settings > Integrations, find Linear, and click Install
Complete the Linear authorization flow

Install from Tembo, not from Linear directly — Tembo’s generated authorize URL carries a state token that ties the install back to your org. Starting from Linear’s own OAuth Applications page skips that and the callback will fail even with valid credentials.

Step 6: Verify

Go to your Tembo instance and navigate to Settings > Integrations
Confirm Linear shows as connected
Assign a Linear issue to Tembo, or @mention it in a comment, and confirm a session starts
